My favorite candy is heath bars. Once I took my little sister trick-or-treating,she is 12 years younger than me. This boy around the block, knew I was taking her trick or treating, and wanted to pull a prank on me. He rigged a body to come out of the tree when we walked by. It scared my sister so much she wet her pants. He felt really bad about it and gave her a bunch of candy. I commented on your recipe. twoofakind12@yahoo.com
My favorite memory is winning a radio contest when I was a kid. To encourage kids to be home by a certain time they would hold drawing after 10 pm and I won a Dr. Pepper prize pack!
Beth, I love your creative genius! I guess you might call it "Sweet Inspiration." (Hey, that could be the title of your next book!) Now, it's going to look like I'm trying to kiss something, but my favority candy is your chocolate truffles. They are awesome. If I have to choose a favorite of a more commercial nature it'd be heath bars...or butterfingers...or sugar babies. Pretty much anything that sticks to you teeth with the exception of tootsie rolls. A good Beggar's Night memory: We didn't have much money and buying a costume was out of the question. I always liked something that looked different. So I got an old t-shirt and sewed a skinny two-sided pouch down the back, and added another three sided pouch to the back of a pair of jeans. Then I got the handle to a mop my mom threw out, and nailed a laundry basket upside down on one end. I drew a BIG crazy face on a bed sheet, threw it over the laundry basket and stuck the mop handle into the pouches. I had a costume that was about nine feet tall, easy to wear, and was fairly different. Got lots of candy that night! Your quesadilla recipe sounded good, but I didn't try it. We went to the opening night instead of having an eclipse party. But I like the idea: change the image to suit the occasion.
I LOVE the fact that my chocolate truffles are your favorite candies. My friend gave me some red currents this week and I made truffles using their juice. Yum! I have extras if you'd like some:) I also love creative costumes. I never wore a store bought costume as a child. Of course back then store bought costumes consisted of a plastic mask and a plastic cape.
My favorite beggar's night memory is my mom would suprize me with my costume. I would give her a short list of what I wanted to dress up as and she would pick one and make the costume and suprize me right before it was time to go out.
A couple of years ago, I was walking with my kids and this guy, dressed up as a zombie was following us. My kids were little at the time, so I didn't say anything to them, but boy was I wierded out. I was actually afraid. I told them that we were done for the night and that I had more treats for them at home and we headed directly home. Thanks again rickpeggysmith(at)aol(dot)com
My favorite memory is making a homemade spaghetti costume out of shredded paper at the last minute because my mom wouldn't let me trick-or-treat without a costume.
Beggars nite memory: There is a neigborhood in our area that has everyone outside giving out apple cider and doing haunted houses because everyone wanted to joib in the festivities but didn't have a lot of money
it all depends on my mood... but 1 common ingredient seems to be chocolate! (peanut butter cups, milky way, and can't leave out a big, thick plain bar of chocolate...)
i have memories of those houses you could not miss. my neighborhood never did much, but we'd go to other places and it was a lot of fun. i know one street had a lot of their neighbors at ONE house so you'd go in a circle in the yard and grab from each bucket.
I remember one year I gave out full-size candy bars...Abba Zabbas. One of the neighborhood kids came to my door and was super excited...so she went home and changed into a different costume to try to trick me into giving her another one! lol I gave her another one just for effort and enthusiasm (and for making me laugh!)
I have a lot of great memories, I remember one year it was too cold out, snow was everywhere, so my mom took us to the Mall to Trick R Treat. I got some really cool stuff there like baseball cards, I was a ballerina that year.
Must be a regional thing, but I had never heard of Halloween being called Beggars Night--it fits though. My memories are not terribly specific, but because my childhood was a LONG time ago, it was before all the fears of homemade goodies, dangers put into fruit and candy, etc. I lived in a very small town and we knew virtually every house we would go to--one of my favorites was that of one of my classmates. Her mother made the BEST divinity--but my mother loved it too, so the 3 of us kids had to divide up that particular house loot with her!
It is so fun to see the variety of candy people have listed as their favorite. I so love to hear your stories about Beggars' Night (Trick or Treat). Here's one of my memories.
One year it was so cold on Beggars' Night and I was dressed as a Baton Twirler. I wore a leotard with a very short skirt, had my hair done up and wore more makeup than any 8 year old should wear. I proudly carried my baton, twirling for candy at each door. We started out the evening so excited that we barely noticed the cold but it didn't take long before I had to run home to get some long pants before going off to beg at more doors. The evening air grew increasingly colder as we ran from house to house, so when we reached our backyard neighbor's house, I ran home for a coat. As the night wore on my baton began to stick to my hands, so I left it at a friend's house. At that point we still had lots of houses to get to and unfortunately I just looked like an 8 year old who had raided her mom's makeup drawer. I got lot's of comments, but still got candy and that is all that mattered to me.
A favorite Halloween night memory is when I was about 5 years old and my mother sewed me a cool pink ballerina costume with a net tutu--still remember twirling around in our yard waiting for it to get dark!
My mother taking us to a haunted house when i was four - she had to carry me and tripped over something and we both ended up on the ground with FREDDY behind us, not so fun :P
I remember when I went trick or treating our group was a little late and couldn't get any candy from the candy-giving malls nearby...so we walked from house to house in the wind until 10 to get yummy treats :)
the pail idea is so cute......i will always remember the little ole lady that handed out homemade popcorn balls..of course we cant forget the old gentleman with the pastel tupperware glass filled with coins..letting each child reach in and get as much as u can at once..and the lady who makes the handmade drawstring bags..made from scrap material filled with gum and candy..amazing what one remembers..
I'll never forget the year that my little sister's bag got a hole in it and I walked behind her picking up all her candy. We used pillow cases after that.
My favorite memory is when I was in junior high, my friend had a Halloween party and we thought we were the coolest kids ever. But when we went trick-or-treating, a creepy guy dressed as Batman kept following us so we got scared and ran home. Needless to say, we stayed inside the rest of the night! Random but funny memory : )
I can vividly remember running ahead of the pack in order to be the first to knock on the door. I tripped on the curb and landed on a large cactus. OUCH! I had to go back home and let my Grandmama pick out the thorns. Trick-Or-Treating was over before it started.
One of my favorite memories is the only Halloween I can remember spending with my father since he passed away when I was 7. We went to the haunted house in our town and my Dad took me through. Its one of my most vivid memories of him.
My favorite candy would have to be peanut MMs. They're the perfect candy and I tell myself that since the nuts have protein its a legitimate snack option!
My mom always made super cool Halloween costumes for us and it was great because it wasn't just like what everyone else had it was unique. One year she made a matching costume for her and me, it was a dragon and it was such a great costume everyone was talking about it for weeks afterward. I definitely felt super cool! :)
One year my Dad was dressed in a custume sitting on a chair on a porch and he looked when trick or treater would come to our door he would suddenly wake up and scare them.
